Paula Doherty Elected First Female President of GAA Rounders
GAA Rounders is pleased to announce the election of Paula Doherty from Castlebar, Co Mayo, as the Association’s first female President. Paula brings an exceptional blend of playing experience, educational leadership, and long-standing administrative service to the position.
A current All-Star and a key member of the Breaffy Senior Ladies squad that captured four successive All-Ireland titles, Paula has been one of the most influential players in the modern era of the game. Her on-field success is matched by her commitment off the pitch, where she has contributed significantly to national development structures, juvenile pathways, and club growth across the country.
Professionally, Paula serves as Programme Director in St Angela’s College, Sligo, a role that reflects her strengths in organisation, communication, and strategic leadership — qualities that have earned her widespread respect throughout the Rounders community.
In her acceptance speech, Paula thanked the membership for their support and emphasised her focus on stability, clear communication, and supporting the volunteers who drive the sport forward:
“It is a privilege to take on this position. My priority is to support the clubs, volunteers, and players who sustain Rounders every week.”
She also acknowledged the significance of her election, while making it clear that her attention is firmly on delivering progress:
“Being the first woman to hold this role is something I’m proud of, but the real work begins now. Titles matter less than the improvements we make together.”
Paula outlined the key themes that will guide her presidency — strengthening structures, improving communication, and enhancing development pathways:
“People want clarity, consistency, and respect. If we get our systems right — fixtures, communication, development, refereeing — the sport will continue to grow.”
She also highlighted the need to rebuild trust and ensure every club feels valued and heard:
“Rounders has huge potential, but potential becomes progress only when everyone feels listened to. That will be central to how we move forward.”
Paula concluded by acknowledging those who encouraged her to put her name forward:
“I did not take this decision lightly. I care deeply about our sport and will give the role everything I have.”
Her election has been warmly welcomed nationwide and marks a significant milestone for GAA Rounders as the Association looks ahead to continued growth and development.
